More information: http://www.aishe.org/forums/aishe-talk.html -- To all AISHE members Announcing two upcoming events at the Unversity of Limerick As part of our Spring Teaching and Learning Series (full programme available on request), the following key workshops may be of particular interest to Aishe members: 1. 'Wise lovers: An Education for Players' - Pat Kane, Feb 14th 10am - 12noon >From Rousseau to Paiget, from Reggio Emilia to Sesame Street, the practical and theoretical relationship between education and play has been complex and contested. Yet in a society where the values of "play" have become as much the province of adults as children - through revolutions in technology, economy, mobility, gender, expressive culture and spirituality - the function of education has to be reimagined. What kind of life narratives, gained through education, are appropriate to a "runaway world" (A. Giddens) of permanent flux and change? We know how to educate the worker - but that increasingly points towards a stable image of society that no longer exists. And children and young adults are often educating their teachers about what it means to be a player - through their gaming, texting, networks, self-imaginings and friendships, their multi-literacies of all kinds. How can pedagogy catch up, and mesh its traditions with the nascent civilisation of play? Is there a "play ethic" - an overall picture of the aims of education in a complex and dynamic age - that might guide educators in their practice? Pat Kane is director of ThePlayEthic.com, a cultural consultancy based in Glasgow, Scotland. Since its founding in October 2000, Pat Kane's clients have included Bartle Bogle Hegarty, Lowe Lintas, St. Luke's, Demos, Forum for the Future, the Design Council, Poiesis/Power of the Arts, The Strategic Futures Unit @ The Cabinet Office, International Futures Forum/BP, the Association of the Directors of Social Work (ADSW), and the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA). He is developing a comprehensive "play audit" for organisations, institutions and enterprises, based on his cutting-edge research into the past, present and future of ludic culture. Pat Kane is also writing a book for Macmillan about the ideas and practice of the modern player, titled "The Play Ethic: Living Creatively in the New Century", due out in late 2003. He is a regular commentator for UK publications like the Independent and the Sunday Times, and for the Sunday Herald in Scotland. In the 90's he was a political activist for Scottish self-government (now achieved!). In the 80's Pat was one half of the jazz-pop group Hue & Cry (performing with James Brown, Ray Charles, Madonna, Simply Red, among many others), and is still writing, playing and recording today. 2. 'Making the most of your brain and helping your students to do the same' Tony Buzan - 1 day workshop (9.30am - 5pm), March 27th Tony Buzan's workshop will help participants to tap into their intellectual potential in creative and interesting ways. In 1968, Tony was working in London as Editor of the Mensa International Journal and successfully teaching "impossible learners" when the BBC asked him to host an educational series called 'Use Your Head'. This innovative programme began successful 25 year collaboration with the BBC. He is the holder of the World Record for Creative I.Q. Tony established the 'Brain Foundation', which organises the 'World Memory Championships'.
