Attached are further details of the AISHE event that is scheduled
to take place on January 10th 2003 at NUI Maynooth.  The venue is
on the South Campus and maps are available on the NUI Maynooth
website.

			  David Jacques

	       Learning in Small and Large Groups


11.00 a.m. Friday 10th January Renehan Hall NUI, Maynooth

David Jaques will facilitate a workshop on the topic of learning
in small and large groups on 10th January, to the Annual General
Meeting of the Society.

The Objectives: 

o To recognise that the problems and delights of small and large
  group teaching have much in common

o To incorporate a range of skills and strategies that enhance
  student learning in groups

o To feel confident and enthused to try new approaches in groups

The Format

The varied programme for the event will include input from the
facilitator, work by the participants in pairs and groups and an
opportunity to plan for future action.  The workshop will consist
of:

o Opening exercise in pairs

o Presentation on research evidence concerning teaching and
  learning in higher education

o Group exercise on leading discussion

o Demonstration of useful group interventions and structures 

o Case study discussion on how assessment can promote learning in groups

o Action planning in pairs

The workshop will commence at 11.00a.m (coffee at 10.45.a.m.) and
close at 3.00 p.m.  Lunch will be served in Pugin Hall at 1.00
p.m.

Bookings must be received on or before 7 January.  We will
confirm your place by email.  A note of any special dietary
requirements would be appreciated.


The Presenter

David Jaques, FSEDA, ILTM, MPhil, Ac. Dip. Ed. has worked in
higher education for 36 years, first as an Engineering Lecturer,
then in Organisational and Interpersonal Communication, and
finally as Head of the Educational Methods Unit at Oxford Brookes
University, where he was responsible for improving the quality of
teaching and learning. Author of the book Learning in Groups, he
has made contributions to higher education through books and
training materials for higher education for 20 years and has run
courses around the world with support from The British Council
and in Central and Eastern Europe for the Soros Foundation.  He
also works at the University of London Institute of Education as
a tutor on their Professional Accreditation for Teachers in
Higher Education course. He is particularly interested in how to
enrich teaching and learning for both students and teachers, in
organisational structures and systems that provide more open
communication, and in cross-cultural learning. He is a Fellow of
the Staff and Educational Development Association and a Member of
the Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher
Education. Aside from all that he is a committed cyclist and
sings in choirs and opera.
