There is little doubt that during the past 10 years universities have made marked progress in making the learning environments more welcoming to a wider variety of students. This increased diversity, as well as changes in legislation, indicates a fresh look at our practice.
This one day programme for academic and support staff at Queen's and AISHE members will focus upon effective strategies for teaching for inclusion. It will examine what changes and adaptations can be made in teaching, learning and assessment in order to ensure that all our students achieve their potential and experience success.
The programme will be led by a number of presenters who have undertaken work in the area of inclusive teaching and those with information regarding disability services in Queen's and resources developed in the Higher Education Academy.
Dr Val Chapman (University of Worcester): Disability awareness for teaching and learning and assessment.
As a result of engaging in the session, participants should become aware of the barriers faced by disabled students in a range of learning, teaching and assessment (TLA) related contexts, be able to identify and address discriminatory practices in learning, teaching and assessment and, where appropriate, be reminded of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and its relevance to their own practice.
Disability Services: An overview of Disability with Queen's
Ms Sandra Griffiths: What are effective strategies for teaching for inclusion?
This presentation will focus on the context of teaching for inclusion and what staff and students have to say about their experience of an inclusive approach. The strengths and challenges of facilitating an inclusive approach will be examined in teaching, learning, assessment and e-learning. Participants will be invited to engage with an activity which aims to look at some of the practical implications of teaching for inclusion.
Dr Helen May (HE Academy): Resources for Teaching for Inclusion
There are currently over 840 resources in the Disability Equality Partnership resource database, covering different subject disciplines, stages of the student lifecycle, disability impairments, as well as aspects of inclusive practice. We know that this database is not exhaustive, nor does it include materials being produced by individual institutions. With such a plethora of materials available, this presentation aims to signpost teaching and learning staff to key resources and work being done to support evidence-informed approaches at a national level.
Ms Jane Wray (University of Hull): Teaching and Learning in Off Campus Settings
The environment in which learning and teaching takes place is no longer confined to the academic setting and off campus provision such as field trips, placements and study abroad increasingly form an integral component of the student experience. This presentation will outline best practice in inclusive teaching and learning in off campus settings and will use examples from research conducted with disabled students in social work, nursing, teaching, business studies, geography and biology.
