Abstract

Poster presentation -

Provision of higher education for overseas students has become a very important source of income for British universities (Mazzarol, 1998; Mazzarol and Soutar, 1999, 2002). This paper reviews the experience of non-United Kingdom domiciled students' experience at the University of Plymouth. Confirming Huang's (2005) emphasis on the importance of the mainland Chinese student in British universities, this study incorporates the views of 99 such individuals.

A number of British students were included in the sample (n = 459) in order to compare responses to specific attitudes and concerns. A small number of respondents are studying tourism and hospitality undergraduate awards and their views are useful to compare with more conventional BA Business Administration and BA Accounting & Finance students. The substantial quantitative study considered the pre-arrival experience, settling in period, and experience to date; for the purposes of this paper, respondents' views of the course, including work placement services, are discussed.
