How to wake up student engagement in the learning process - using CHOICE and flexible assessment. The explanatory case study.

Abstract

Increasing student awareness of market expectations in area of their knowledge and skills together with the increasing pressure on changing the way students are taught, have a strong impact on university course programs and teaching methods. These tendencies can also be observed in the area of student work assessment. The main challenge facing university teachers is how to shape the course assessment to stimulate students to:

The main answer to the above questions is to let students decide or manage the process of learning by choosing different ways of getting knowledge in connection with a flexible points assessment. The system would have to be designed to ensure the aims of the course are met.

Based on a theoretical thesis the authors explain how flexible points assessment system can influence students engagement in learning process. The following methods of teaching and the ways of assessing them will be described in detail:

One business management course run at The Poznan University of Economics will be used to explain the assessment. Student projects and their opinions on the assessment will also be presented.
