Abstract

Evaluating teaching on a regular basis plays a crucial role in creating and sustaining an effective learning environment within higher education. Once the predilection of the enthusiastic lecturer, it is now accepted practice to seek evaluation of teaching and student learning as an integral element of an effective teaching strategy.

Based on our reflections and evaluations of the Reflective Teaching Portfolio programme offered to academic staff at Trinity College Dublin by the Centre of Academic Practice and Student Learning (CAPSL), this paper will examine the emergence of evaluation as a key factor in our reflective teaching approach.

Quoting case studies from previous cohorts, and illustrated by our two-tiered approach of student and peer evaluation, we will highlight the importance of using a variety of evaluation techniques and of analysing feedback to sustain teaching effectiveness and identify effective implications for practice.
