Abstract

A study in Waterford Institute of Technology with learners involved in two adult-only courses provided insights into what works for them, and the particular difficulties they face. The tensions between traditional learning environment and older learners serve to inhibit many from pursuing a third-level career. The adults surveyed identified the elements that contributed to their retention and these are described and analysed. One particular concern that adults present with in third-level is their wish to have their experience acknowledged: ways in which this can be done are considered.

The issues identified by the learners are put into the wider context of attitudinal and other issues in higher education, particularly those that require the adult learner to prepare and adapt to fit into a mainstream system that faces considerable challenges, yet the changes that are sought by adults will enable all potential student groups to benefit. Change we must, especially if diverse learners are to be accommodated. Malcolm Skilbeck states that 'more of the same is not enough'. There are questions raised about where the changes need to happen - at national policy level; institutionally; within schools and departments; at the level of individual teaching practice. There are questions about the moments where difference needs to be encompassed: targeting, selection, preparation, curriculum and assessment. There are fears about accommodating difference to be addressed. Do adult learners themselves want to be treated differently?

The paper describes the findings from the research carried out with adult learners, and considers the role critical education can contribute to understanding and enhancing the learning environment for them.
