------------------------------------------------------------------- All Ireland Society for Higher Education (AISHE) http://www.aishe.org _What?_ AISHE is a professional society whose goal is to bring together and support those people who are concerned to advance higher education in the island of Ireland. It promotes the professional recognition and enhancement of teaching and learning in Higher Education through a wide range of activities including seminars, conferences, publications, and provision of online community forums and services. _Why?_ The initiative to establish AISHE originated in the Colloquium on University Teaching and Learning: Policy and Practice, held at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, 1st-2nd December, 1998. This was organised under the auspices of the Irish University Training Network, and attended by over 100 representatives from nine higher education institutions across the island of Ireland. In plenary session, the Colloquium unanimously endorsed a recommendation that an Irish Society for Higher Education be founded. _When?_ AISHE was formally established at a meeting hosted at University College Cork, 14 March, 2000, where the AISHE Constitution was adopted, and an interim executive committee elected. Membership opened on 25th October 2000, and AISHE was publicly launched on 30th November 2000 by Prof. Seamus Smyth, President of NUI Maynooth. _Who?_ AISHE membership is open to _everyone_ with an interest in its aims and objectives; but it is particularly focussed on supporting teaching and learning staff (academics, tutors, library, IT support, AV services etc.) in all institutions of Higher Education anywhere on the island of Ireland. _How can I find out more? How can I join?_ You can find updated information and resources, and apply for membership of AISHE, simply by visiting the web site at: http://www.aishe.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- [27-May-2002]
