Reinvigorating the Civic Mission of the University

Founding statements, charters and vision statements of most
universities lay claim to a "civic mission;" a contribution to
the wider community and participation in debate on the issues of
the day. To what extent are such statements matched with
practical examples of civic engagement? In this presentation we
will focus on a number of examples from Ireland and the US that
highlight possible means of reinvigorating this key dimension of
higher education. Topics considered include "service learning",
university-community partnerships and outreach work.
